Ashwagandha (KSM-66) — The Stress-Modulating Adaptogen
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a prominent adaptogenic herb used to enhance resilience to physical and mental stress. In the context of longevity, its highly concentrated KSM-66 root extract is valued for its ability to lower cortisol, mitigate chronic stress-induced wear and tear (allostatic load), and support metabolic and cognitive health.
Mechanism of Action

Dosing Protocol
300–600 mg/day of KSM-66 root extract is the most studied range in humans. Typically taken in two divided doses (e.g., 300 mg twice daily) or as a single dose. Best taken with food to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort. Unestablished for long-term continuous use beyond 12 months.
Safety & Contraindications
Generally well-tolerated in short- to medium-term use (up to 12 months). Mild adverse effects may include gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea, or drowsiness. Contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding. May interact with thyroid medications (as it can increase thyroid hormone levels), immunosuppressants, and sedatives.
