Beetroot powder — The Dietary Nitrate Source

Beetroot powder is a concentrated source of dietary nitrate, which the body converts into nitric oxide to promote vasodilation and improve blood flow. In the context of longevity, it is valued for its ability to lower blood pressure, enhance endothelial function, and improve mitochondrial efficiency during physical exertion.

Mechanism of Action

Beetroot powder is rich in inorganic nitrate (NO3-), which is reduced to nitrite (NO2-) by commensal bacteria in the oral cavity. In the stomach and systemic circulation, nitrite is further reduced to nitric oxide (NO), particularly under conditions of hypoxia or low pH. Elevated NO induces vasodilation via the activation of soluble guanylyl cyclase and the production of cyclic GMP, leading to smooth muscle relaxation and reduced blood pressure. Additionally, NO improves mitochondrial efficiency and reduces the oxygen cost of ATP production during skeletal muscle contraction.

Human Trial Evidence

Numerous human trials demonstrate that dietary nitrate from beetroot juice or powder reduces resting blood pressure and improves exercise efficiency. Meta-analyses confirm its efficacy in lowering systolic blood pressure in both healthy adults and hypertensive patients. It has also been shown to reduce the oxygen cost of submaximal exercise and enhance tolerance to high-intensity exercise.

Dosing Protocol

300–600 mg of dietary nitrate (typically 70–140 mL of concentrated beetroot juice or 5–10 g of beetroot powder) taken 2–3 hours before exercise. For general cardiovascular health, similar daily doses are used. Efficacy depends on oral microbiome conversion, so antibacterial mouthwash should be avoided.

Safety & Contraindications

Generally well tolerated. May cause harmless red discoloration of urine (beeturia) and stool. High doses should be used with caution in individuals prone to calcium oxalate kidney stones due to the oxalate content of beets. Avoid concurrent use with PDE5 inhibitors or high-dose antihypertensive medications due to the risk of additive hypotension.
