Black ginger (Kaempferia parviflora) is a medicinal plant native to Southeast Asia, traditionally used to enhance male sexual performance and vitality. Its longevity relevance stems from its polymethoxyflavones, which act as natural PDE5 inhibitors and have been shown in preclinical models to activate SIRT1 and AMPK pathways, promoting mitochondrial function and vascular health.
Mechanism of Action
Black ginger contains polymethoxyflavones that act as natural, low-affinity phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors, promoting vasodilation and endothelial function. In preclinical models, its extracts have been shown to upregulate the SIRT1/AMPK/PGC-1α/PPARδ signaling pathways, enhancing mitochondrial biogenesis and cellular energy metabolism. It also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties and inhibits cellular senescence in vitro, though these systemic longevity mechanisms remain poorly characterised in humans.
Human Trial Evidence
A 30-day open-label pilot study in 14 healthy older men found that 100 mg/day of KaempMax improved self-assessed erectile function and intercourse satisfaction (Stein et al., 2018, Journal of Integrative Medicine). No published human longevity trials exist; evidence for systemic anti-aging effects remains limited to animal and in-vitro models.
Dosing Protocol
100 mg/day of standardized extract (KaempMax) is the most studied dose in human trials for sexual health. Typically taken daily for 30-60 days. Unestablished for broader longevity endpoints in humans.
Safety & Contraindications
Generally well tolerated at standard doses (90-100 mg/day) in short-term studies. Potential adverse effects include mild gastrointestinal upset. Due to its PDE5 inhibitory activity, it should be used with caution in individuals taking nitrates or prescription PDE5 inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil) due to the risk of hypotension. Long-term safety data is lacking.
