Collagen Peptides (Verisol) — The Skin Elasticity Peptide
Verisol is a patented bioactive collagen peptide (BCP) ingredient from GELITA, specifically optimised for skin, hair, and nail applications. Unlike generic collagen hydrolysates, Verisol is produced through a targeted enzymatic hydrolysis process that generates specific peptide sequences (particularly Pro-Hyp and Hyp-Gly dipeptides) that act as signalling molecules in dermal fibroblasts, stimulating de novo collagen synthesis and reducing matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity. Multiple Tier I randomised controlled trials confirm significant improvements in skin elasticity, wrinkle reduction, and nail growth.
Mechanism of Action
Verisol peptides are absorbed intact from the gastrointestinal tract and accumulate in the dermis, where they act as partial agonists of collagen receptors on fibroblasts. This receptor-mediated signalling upregulates the transcription of COL1A1 and COL3A1 genes (encoding type I and III collagen), increases hyaluronic acid synthase expression, and suppresses MMP-1 and MMP-3 collagenase activity — effectively shifting the dermal extracellular matrix towards a net anabolic state. The specific peptide profile of Verisol (enriched in Pro-Hyp, Hyp-Gly, and Ala-Hyp sequences) has been shown in cell culture studies to be more potent at stimulating fibroblast collagen synthesis than equivalent doses of non-specific collagen hydrolysate. Additionally, Verisol supplementation increases the density of the dermal collagen network as measured by confocal Raman spectroscopy.
Human Trial Evidence
A 2014 double-blind RCT in Skin Pharmacology and Physiology (Proksch et al.) demonstrated that 2.5 g/day of Verisol for 8 weeks significantly improved skin elasticity (+7%) and reduced eye wrinkle volume (-20%) compared to placebo in 69 women aged 35–55. A follow-up 2014 study confirmed a 65% reduction in cellulite score and improved skin waviness after 6 months. A 2017 RCT in the Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications showed that 2.5 g/day for 24 weeks significantly increased nail growth rate (+12%) and reduced nail breakage frequency (-42%). These are among the most rigorous clinical trials in the nutraceutical skin space.
Dosing Protocol
The clinically validated dose is 2.5 g/day of Verisol collagen peptides, taken consistently for a minimum of 8 weeks to observe skin elasticity benefits, and 24 weeks for nail benefits. Higher doses (5 g/day) have been studied without additional benefit over 2.5 g/day for skin endpoints. Best dissolved in water, juice, or a smoothie. Verisol is tasteless and odourless. Consistent daily use is essential — benefits diminish within 4 weeks of cessation.
Safety & Contraindications
Verisol collagen peptides have an excellent safety profile across all published clinical trials. Derived from bovine hide, it is contraindicated for individuals with bovine protein allergy. No significant drug interactions have been identified. As a food-derived protein hydrolysate, it is not associated with systemic toxicity at any studied dose. Individuals following a vegan diet cannot use animal-derived collagen peptides; plant-based alternatives (e.g., orthosilicic acid, vitamin C, glycine) support endogenous collagen synthesis but do not replicate the receptor-signalling mechanism of Verisol.
