Cordyceps militaris is a medicinal mushroom traditionally used to enhance vitality, stamina, and respiratory function. In the context of longevity, it is studied for its potential to improve mitochondrial ATP production, exercise capacity, and immunomodulation through its active compound, cordycepin.
Mechanism of Action
The primary bioactive compound in Cordyceps militaris is cordycepin (3'-deoxyadenosine), a nucleoside analogue. It also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting the NF-κB pathway and downregulating pro-inflammatory cytokines. Human trials on Cordyceps militaris specifically for longevity are limited, though studies exist on its effects on exercise performance. A 2010 study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that a Cordyceps militaris blend improved exercise performance and contributed to wellness in healthy older subjects. However, large-scale, long-term human longevity trials are currently lacking.

Typical dosing in human studies ranges from 1,000 to 3,000 mg per day of Cordyceps militaris extract, often divided into two doses. It is generally taken with meals. Standardised extracts containing specific percentages of cordycepin (e.g., >0.3%) are preferred for consistency.
