DHA (algal) — The Marine Omega-3 for Brain Health

Algal DHA is a plant-based source of docosahexaenoic acid, an essential omega-3 fatty acid critical for neuronal structure and function. It supports longevity by mitigating age-related cognitive decline, resolving systemic inflammation, and improving cardiovascular lipid profiles.

Mechanism of Action

DHA is a structural component of cell membranes, particularly enriched in the brain and retina, where it modulates membrane fluidity and receptor function. It serves as a precursor to specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs), such as resolvins and protectins, which actively resolve inflammation and protect against oxidative stress. In the brain, DHA supports synaptic plasticity, neurogenesis, and the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Systemically, it regulates lipid metabolism by reducing hepatic triglyceride synthesis and enhancing fatty acid oxidation via PPAR-α activation.

Human Trial Evidence

The MIDAS trial demonstrated that 24-week supplementation with 900 mg/day of algal DHA improved learning and episodic memory in healthy older adults with age-related cognitive decline. A 2012 meta-analysis showed that algal DHA supplementation (median dose 1.68 g/day) significantly reduces serum triglycerides and increases HDL-cholesterol, though it may also slightly increase LDL-cholesterol in persons without coronary heart disease.

Dosing Protocol

900–2,000 mg/day is the most studied range in clinical trials for cognitive and cardiovascular benefits. It is typically taken with meals containing fat to enhance absorption. Algal DHA is a suitable alternative for vegans, vegetarians, or those with fish allergies.

Safety & Contraindications

Generally well tolerated. High doses (>3 g/day) may increase bleeding risk, particularly in individuals taking anticoagulants or antiplatelet medications. It may cause mild gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or dyspepsia. The slight increase in LDL-cholesterol observed in some studies should be monitored in at-risk populations.
