Inulin (chicory) — The Microbiome-Modulating Prebiotic Fibre

Inulin is a naturally occurring fructan and soluble dietary fibre extracted primarily from chicory root. It serves as a potent prebiotic, selectively feeding beneficial gut bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) to support metabolic health, immune function, and intestinal barrier integrity.

Mechanism of Action

Inulin resists digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract and reaches the colon intact, where it undergoes fermentation by the gut microbiota. This fermentation process yields short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), primarily acetate, propionate, and butyrate. Butyrate acts as the primary energy source for colonocytes and exerts anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting NF-κB activation and upregulating regulatory T cells (Tregs). Furthermore, SCFA production lowers colonic pH, inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria and enhancing the absorption of minerals such as calcium and magnesium.

Human Trial Evidence

Numerous human clinical trials have demonstrated that inulin supplementation significantly increases fecal Bifidobacteria counts and improves bowel habit. Randomised controlled trials have also shown modest benefits in glycemic control, lipid profiles (particularly lowering serum triglycerides), and weight management in prediabetic and obese populations. Direct evidence linking inulin supplementation to extended human lifespan is currently lacking.

Dosing Protocol

Typical dosing ranges from 5 to 15 grams per day, usually taken in divided doses with water or mixed into food. It is highly recommended to start with a low dose (e.g., 2–3 grams per day) and gradually titrate upwards over several weeks to minimise gastrointestinal discomfort.

Safety & Contraindications

Inulin is generally recognised as safe but frequently causes gastrointestinal side effects, including bloating, flatulence, cramping, and osmotic diarrhea, particularly at doses exceeding 15 grams per day or when introduced too rapidly. It should be avoided or used with extreme caution in individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or those following a low-FODMAP diet.
